Children playing pumps water

Colgate’s donation for a South African community

Colgate-Palmolive Europe has identified an amazing and easy way to provide the energy for much needed water pumps in communities with little or no access to fresh water. A Colgate donation has helped build a recently completed ‘Play Pump’, to provide a South African community (Badihile in the Northern Cape) with fresh water, as part of its Global Save Water programme.

A Play Pump provides water by using the boundless energy of children playing. A merry-go-round is connected to a water pump. As children play on the merry-go-round, spinning the wheel with their muscle power, water is pumped into a storage tank, and is then available on demand.

“We are proud to actively support this initiative. Water scarcity is a major issue in many regions in Africa and we are pleased to help promoting water conservation and improving access to clean, fresh water.”

Prabha Parameswaran, President of Colgate-Palmolive Europe

1 in 10 people worldwide have no access to clean water. The donation supports the company’s global campaign #EveryDropCounts which publicises water shortages around the world. Colgate-Palmolive employees across Europe have also shared their personal pledges to save water on social media.

The global campaign includes the company’s award winning ‘Save Water’ ad.
