IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE
Colgate Total® toothpaste is an evidence-based solution suitable for the daily oral hygiene. Compared to a regular fluoride toothpaste, brushing with Colgate Total® toothpaste delivers superior reductions in plaque, gingivitis and caries and provides safe and long-term oral health benefits.
PRODUCTS UNDER INVESTIGATION
- Test toothpaste: fluoride (in 26 studies: 1100 ppm fluoride from sodium fluoride) toothpaste containing 0.3% triclosan and 2.0% copolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride (PVM/MA Copolymer) (Colgate-Palmolive Company, New York, NY)
- Control toothpaste: fluoride (in 24 studies: 1100 ppm fluoride from sodium fluoride) toothpaste without triclosan and PVM/MA Copolymer
In total, 14’835 participants were included in this review. 2 studies were performed with children (mean age 12.7 years). 28 studies were performed with participants from 18 to 81 years (mean age ranging from 21.5 to 59 years).
Primary outcomes were plaque and gingivitis parameters. Meta analyses were performed on:
- Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (20 Studies), Plaque Severity Index (13 Studies), Löe-Silness Plaque Index (2 Studies)
- Löe-Silness Gingival Index (20 Studies), Gingival Severity Index (15 Studies).
Secondary outcomes were parameters on periodontitis (attachment loss: 1 study), caries (DMFS/T: 3
studies), calculus (Volpe-Manhold Calculus Index: 2 studies) and adverse effects (no adverse effects
reported in 22 studies).

2. 535 references were reviewed closely against the inclusion criteria of this review:
- randomised controlled trials of at least 6 months,
- cross-over studies with sufficient wash-out periods,
- studies with and without baseline prophylaxis but with same treatment at baseline
Excluded: All studies with co-interventions (including periodontitis at baseline), with no fluoride-only arm or with interventions at risk to wash out active ingredients.
3. 30 studies with various and defined levels of risk of bias were included in the review.
4. Studies with similar outcomes (plaque, gingivitis, periodontits, caries and calculus) were combined in meta analysis according to the standardised methodology.
This Cochrane review including 30 studies with 14’835 participants confirms that long-term use of a triclosan/copolymer toothpaste results in superior reductions in plaque and gingivitis and even demonstrates additional caries reduction, when compared to a regular fluoride toothpaste. Additionally, there was no evidence of any adverse events during the studies. This indicates that Colgate Total® toothpaste is safe for long-term use and delivers proven oral health benefits.
